Henryetta’s golf course owes its layout to one of the most prominent names in early course design – Perry Duke Maxwell.PerryMaxwell
Born in Kentucky to parents of Scottish Descent, Maxwell built his first golf course in Ardmore on the site of a former dairy farm.
From there he built the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma City Golf and Country Club and Prairie Dunes Country Club.
Over the years he made major contributions to such revered layouts as Pine Valley Golf Club, Augusta National Golf Club (home of the Masters), Colonial Country Club, Crystal Downs Country Club, and Merion Golf Club. In total, Maxwell is estimated to have designed 70 courses and remodeled about 50 others.
He was the first designer to use grass greens in Oklahoma.
His designs were based on using the natural features and landscapes of the courses he designed.
One of his designs, the tenth hole at the Augusta National Golf Club, is considered one of the ten most difficult holes in the country.
He partnered with Dr. Alister MacKenzie to produce challenging curses around the country.
Maxwell became a founding member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects and was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 2012.
