Henryetta Lady Duffers                                  June, 2014 Update

In between the rains—and I’m not complaining about the rain—we’ve seen quite a few folks out playing the course this late spring. The temperatures and wind have been totally conducive to a good round of golf, even without the bounce we usually get from the dry fairways. The way I look at it, any day we get to play is a good day, and today just might be one of those days!!!

“First Friday” Steak Nite Goes BBQ for the 4th of July

We’ve been averaging over 60 people each night for our First Friday dinners, and I think everyone agrees it’s been a lot of fun to have this great opportunity to eat a nice meal and visit with great friends right here in our own backyard.

As the calendar would fall, our First Friday in July is on Independence Day, and we’re going to switch from steaks to a good old fashioned Oklahoma picnic with BBQ, baked beans, coleslaw, potato salad, and ice cold watermelon for dessert. Reservations are still required so we can plan on having enough food, and it’s definitely a family friendly event. We’re planning on fireworks at dark, so bring a blanket or lawn chairs and the family and spend the evening. We’ll close the course to golf by 8 pm, so everyone can get a seat on the fairway if you prefer, to better see the fireworks.

Let me know if you are able to help with this event as we plan to serve the meal buffet style to better control the servings. Our raffle basket this month will be a cash 50/50 drawing, so be sure to get your tickets as you come out to eat. This event is open to members and our guests, so if you know someone who might enjoy the supper and fireworks on the 4th, be sure to invite them. Just make sure they know to call the clubhouse at (918) 652-8664 by Tuesday, July 1 for a reservation.

Course Update – Greens Campaign Progress

Temporary greens abound on every hole, and what we once knew as bent-grass greens are no more. The greens have been killed off, stripped of existing turf, and prepped for the sprigs of Champion Bermuda turf scheduled to arrive this week.

Once everything is planted, greens chairman Jimmy Cunningham and a small army of volunteers will be scheduled to help with the project, including the constant watering over the next few weeks. If you (or your spouse) are available and interested in helping this project, be sure to let Jimmy know. He’s at the course nearly every day now working toward getting ready for this project.

Did you hear the story from David Warden who had a chance to play at Pinehurst #8 with his son a few weeks ago? He was amazed at how remarkable the greens were for putting, and when he inquired about them, he was told they are Champion Bermuda. It seems that even with endless resources at Pinehurst Country Club, they also had difficulty keeping bentgrass greens in the southern summers, and are even planning to change out Pinehurst #2 to Champion Bermuda as soon as the ladies US Open is completed after this week. I know it was sure different watching the mens US Open on that course with all of their changes. Their rough was worse than ours. LOL.

Golf Outing at Southern Hills Country Club – Raffle Tickets on Sale

Have you ever wanted to be able to play a round at Southern Hills Country Club and face the same shots as the pros who played the PGA and US Open on that course? You could be the lucky winner of an opportunity to do just that.

As a fund-raiser for the Greens Campaign, First National Bank & Trust Co. President/CEO Nevyle Cable, has generously donated a round of golf at SHCC for a prize in this raffle. The round is a foursome to be played this fall, hosted by Mr. Cable, for the winner and two guests.

Tickets for the drawing are $5 a chance or 5 for $20 and can be purchased at the clubhouse or from any Board member. The drawing will be held on Saturday, September 27, at the HGC Member/Guest Tournament, and you don’t have to be present to win.

Should you have the winning ticket and don’t want to actually play the round, I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding a willing gift recipient for this wonderful prize. Be sure to get your tickets and cross your fingers to win this one!

New Web Info – HGC now on Facebook

In addition to our great website and our presence on www.golfnow.com , our Club is now on Facebook. Be sure to “like” our page – Henryetta Golf Club – and follow the reviews we’re getting and see how many folks are regularly checking in to see what is happening at our course. Log in to the club’s website at www.henryettagolf.com for up to date info. There’s even a neat feature that shows what the current weather conditions are at the course, so you can check before you leave the house to see if you need to change your attire for the weather.

Also, when you sign up on the website, if you are a member, make sure you choose that option so you’ll have access to the Members Only portion of the site.

Memorial Bench Program

You may have noticed the few park benches placed at tee boxes on the course. These have been purchased as part of the Memorial Tribute program for the course. For a donation of $1,000 to Henryetta Golf Course, a person may have a bench purchased and placed in memory or honor of a loved one. To date, there have been four benches purchased in memory of Johnny Moore, Carolyn Broome, E.L. and Fern Warden, and Estle Smith. If you know of someone who might like to use this way to pay tribute to a loved one, have them contact the clubhouse at 918-652-8664 for more information.

Youth Golf Update
The youth golf programs in the Henryetta area are alive and well. Despite some dicey weather, Coach Vandenborn held a 3-day golf camp for kids the first week of June. About a dozen kiddos came out to work on their fundamentals and get some work in with Coach Dutch and with Morgan Brown who helped while home from her collegiate golf career this summer.

Beginning in August, we’ll notice more of the young people on our course. Both Henryetta and now Dewar Schools will be fielding teams of middle school and high school girls and boys competitive golf programs. The coaches will be working closely with the club Board of Directors to set up the practice and tournament schedules to allow the kids to have access to develop their game, while still permitting plenty of play for our club members and guests.

At last count, the following Henryetta High School alumni attended college and played golf:

          Montie Broom, at Cameron University
Jeff Lawrence, at Northeastern State University
J.W. Vandenborn at Oral Roberts Univ. and Univ of Missouri at Kansas                         City where he is presently the Head Golf Coach
Kyle Hefner at Univ. of Missouri at Kansas City
Alan Johnson at Univ. of Missouri at Kansas City
Courtney Underhill at Seminole State College
Amber Smallwood at Seminole State College
Still in school and playing:
Kaylee Crawford at Barton Co. Comm. College & Kansas Wesleyan Univ.
Morgan Brown at Rogers State College
Claire Massey at Seminole State College, and this coming year
Joley Vance at Seminole State College, and
Paige Johnson at St. Gregory’s University.

Membership Reminders

Remember you don’t have to be a member of HGC to be a Lady Duffer. Our annual membership fee is $25 to help cover the cost of expenses for our special functions. If you are an HGC member, you don’t pay greens fees each week. But if you are not a member, greens fees are $5.75 plus tax. You probably won’t have to rent a cart since there are several of us with carts and we’ll double up and schedule our groups to make sure everyone has a ride.

If you know someone who might want to join us, be sure to call and let them know we’re starting up for the season. We’re duffers, no serious championship golfers in this bunch cause we’re out there playing a game we enjoy to have a good time and fellowship with each other.

Outside Food and Beverage Reminders

Just a friendly reminder that outside food and beverages are not permitted on the course if they are available for sale in our Clubhouse. We are grateful for the full-time management of the clubhouse by Kyle Hefner who makes it possible for the course to be open every day. There is a full line of fountain drinks, energy drinks, beer, and snacks available as well as sandwiches from the grill at very reasonable prices. Be sure to patronize the clubhouse whenever possible, and thanks for your support of our Club.

Mens’ Association Update

If your fella is looking for a group to play with, have him check out the Mens’ Association on Wednesday evenings. Donnie Smith tells me they have a regular small group like ours, but they are always adding more guys to the mix. They tee off at 5:30 pm sharp, and they play a different game each week for a small prize fund. Call the clubhouse for more info at (918) 652-8664.

**** Reminder – If you know you’re not going to be able to play, please call Gayle at 580-421-5084, or leave word at the pro shop at 652-8664 so we’ll know how many are ready to tee off at each Tuesday. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
