Henryetta Lady Duffers                                  August, 2014 Update

Gosh if you are complaining about the weather this summer, you just can’t be satisfied. Have we ever had a better season for golf – just enough sunny warm days to get our Bermuda greens to take off and plenty of rain when we need it to keep everything looking green. You can’t beat the temperate days for being out on the fairways and the marvelous evenings on our veranda for First Friday!

“First Friday” Steak Nite to Kick Off Football Season – Special Time

Well it’s finally here – FOOTBALL SEASON. Yay!!   Of course, with the onset of high school football games on Friday night, we need to make an adjustment to our dinner for September’s First Friday Steak Nite. We will begin serving at 5:30 and go until 7:30 pm to allow folks to eat before the football game if they choose. Henryetta Knights host Morris Eagles for the first home game of the year, and we want to be sure we can allow fans to make it to kickoff if they want to. Wear your team colors and show your school spirit!

We’ve had such a wonderful response in July, serving 93 folks with BBQ, followed by an outstanding fireworks display witnessed by hundreds of townspeople who gathered in our parking lots. Special thanks to Charles and Stephanie Hill and Tyler Wieland for their help in discharging the pyrotechnics and a big, big, thanks to Shane Sanford for his generous assistance with our purchase for the show. It’s a pretty safe bet we’ll be planning on a repeat performance next summer.

Our August First Friday was also a tremendous success with 88 folks joining us for dinner and music provided on the patio by Chamber of Commerce Director, Roy Madden. It was such a delightful evening to be outside, thank goodness, since we lost an A/C unit in the clubhouse just as dinner service was beginning. It worked out wonderfully to have a full veranda throughout the evening with many newcomers who were so surprised to know this event was taking place. The word is out, and we’re hoping to encourage a good number of these guests to join our club as members in the coming months.

Let me know if you are able to help with this event as we lose some of our wait-staff this month when they return to college. This event is open to members and our guests, so if you know someone who might enjoy the supper and a nice evening out, be sure to invite them. Just make sure they know to call the clubhouse at (918) 652-8664 by Tuesday, September 2 for a reservation.

Course Update – Greens Campaign Progress

Temporary greens are only here for a few more weeks. The new Champion Bermuda turf is outstanding. Greens Chairman, Jimmy Cunningham says the plugs of roots are 2 ½ - 3 inches thick when they top-dressed last week, so we are a little ahead of schedule and should be playing on the new surfaces at the end of the month!

Of course, many of us have enjoyed the very generous hole sizes on those temp greens and will surely take a few rounds for our scores to adjust back to normal on the new surfaces. The shortened yardage has helped as well, but we’ll be so excited to be putting on the new surfaces, I’m sure we’ll all be back to our usual scoring in no time…..yeah, right!

Golf Outing at Southern Hills Country Club – Raffle Tickets on Sale

Have you ever wanted to be able to play a round at Southern Hills Country Club and face the same shots as the pros who played the PGA and US Open on that course? You could be the lucky winner of an opportunity to do just that.

As a fund-raiser for the Greens Campaign, First National Bank & Trust Co. President/CEO Nevyle Cable, has generously donated a round of golf at SHCC for a prize in this raffle. The round is a foursome to be played this fall, hosted by Mr. Cable, for the winner and two guests.

Tickets for the drawing are $5 a chance or 5 for $20 and can be purchased at the clubhouse or from any Board member. The drawing will be held on Saturday, September 27, at the HGC Member/Guest Tournament, and you don’t have to be present to win.

Should you have the winning ticket and don’t want to actually play the round, I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding a willing gift recipient for this wonderful prize. Be sure to get your tickets and cross your fingers to win this one!

Ladies Golf Clinic

Coach Dutch Vandenborn has agreed to conduct a 3-nite golf clinic to teach the basics of golf for beginners in September. Ladies who wish to learn are invited to participate, and registration is requested. The clinic will be held on the driving range and putting green on Tuesday evenings, Sept. 2, 9, and 16, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. Then on Sept. 23, the clinic participants will be permitted to play a round on the course to practice what they’ve learned. They are welcome to join us if they wish, but some are intimidated about playing with seasoned players their first time out and will probably play in their own group. The following week, September 30, we will host the clinic participants for a final round of golf for the League season and conclude with a covered dish salad supper in the clubhouse.

The fee for the Clinic is $25, with checks payable to the Henryetta Lady Duffers either in advance or the night of the first clinic. Be sure to pass the word to your friends who might be interested in learning the game. This will also be a great opportunity for us to grow our Lady Duffers League. To register, contact the clubhouse at 918-652-8664.

Youth Golf Update

Beginning at the end of August, we’ll notice more of the young people on our course. Both Henryetta and now Dewar Schools will be fielding teams of middle school and high school girls and boys competitive golf programs. The coaches will be working closely with the club Board of Directors to set up the practice and tournament schedules to allow the kids to have access to develop their game, while still permitting plenty of play for our club members and guests.

Best wishes again to our current collegiate golfers as they begin another season away at school having represented their home club and school in fine fashion.

Kaylee Crawford at Barton Co. Comm. College & Kansas Wesleyan Univ.
Morgan Brown at Rogers State College
Claire Massey at Seminole State College
Joley Vance at Seminole State College, and
Paige Johnson at St. Gregory’s University.

Membership Reminders

Remember you don’t have to be a member of HGC to be a Lady Duffer. Our annual membership fee is $25 to help cover the cost of expenses for our special functions. If you are an HGC member, you don’t pay greens fees each week. But if you are not a member, greens fees are $5.75 plus tax. You probably won’t have to rent a cart since there are several of us with carts and we’ll double up and schedule our groups to make sure everyone has a ride.

If you know someone who might want to join us, be sure to call and let them know we’re starting up for the season. We’re duffers, no serious championship golfers in this bunch cause we’re out there playing a game we enjoy to have a good time and fellowship with each other.

Outside Food and Beverage Reminders

Just a friendly reminder that outside food and beverages are not permitted on the course if they are available for sale in our Clubhouse. We are grateful for the full-time management of the clubhouse by Kyle Hefner who makes it possible for the course to be open every day. There is a full line of fountain drinks, energy drinks, beer, and snacks available as well as sandwiches from the grill at very reasonable prices. Be sure to patronize the clubhouse whenever possible, and thanks for your support of our Club.

Glow-Golf Tourney

The Glow-Golf event held last week was a huge success, raising over a thousand dollars for the benefit of the Greens Campaign. Forty players participated in a scramble 9-hole event beginning at 5 pm, followed by a wonderful home-cooked supper of Chicken-fried Steak, Mashed potatoes and Gravy, Corn, and Green Beans, with a Tossed Salad and Dessert furnished by Jane Cunningham Parrish and her family. The interlude following dinner while waiting for darkness provided plenty of opportunity for fellowship and visiting with many guests and spouses joining us on the veranda.

Once it got dark, the real fun started. Another 9-hole scramble with glow-in-the-dark balls, glow sticks on the tee boxes and pins, and glow discs in the holes made for an interesting and hilariously fun round of golf. Several folks even ventured additional golf after the tourney was concluded. If you ever get the chance to play it even once, you’ll come back. You surely have to be confident in your swing, because you can’t see anything but the ball in the dark!

Upcoming Tournament News

There are several upcoming tournaments planned to help round out the season. On August 30, Butch Glover will be hosting the Henryetta Invitational Tournament beginning at 9:00 am with an 18-hole 4-man Scramble tournament with a $60/person entry fee. You can enter as a team or individually and be added to a team.

August 31 and September 1 is Labor Day Weekend, and Jimmy Cunningham is hosting this annual two-day event. Playing 18 holes each day, the Sunday round is Scramble format and Monday round is Alternate Shot. Entry fee is $75/person.

Member/Guest Tournament is held on Saturday, September 27, with an 8:30 shotgun start for this 18-hole Scramble event hosted by the Club’s Board of Directors. Entry fee is $25 per member and includes lunch and invited guests of members play for free. This event is designed to expose potential members to the Club and our Membership Special will be in force for those who join at the $650/year fee at that time and receive free play for the remainder of the year. Enter a team or individually, but be sure to invite a potential member as your guest.

The first annual Tailgate Classic will be held on Saturday September 27 and Sunday September 28. Saturday tee time is 2 pm and Sunday tee time at 10 am with 18 holes both days. This is a two-man Scramble event, with entry fee of $450 per two-man team. Teams will be flighted based on combined handicaps with some hefty cash prizes and Scotty Cameron putters in play on this event. Hosted by Clubhouse Manager, Kyle Hefner, this event should draw a large out of town contingent for a full field.

The final scheduled event of the year is the annual Henryetta Cup Tournament hosted by J. W. Vandenborn benefiting the Chip In Club and the Jeff Lawrence Scholarship Fund. This tournament will be held on Saturday and Sunday, November 1 and 2, with a $100 per person entry fee.

To register for any of the above tournaments, contact the Clubhouse at 918-652-8664 and be prepared to issue payment at the time of registration to secure your spot. Most of these events fill up rather quickly so if you have an interest in playing, get your spot reserves.

Mens’ Association Update

If your fella is looking for a group to play with, have him check out the Mens’ Association on Wednesday evenings. Donnie Smith tells me they have a regular small group like ours, but they are always adding more guys to the mix. They tee off at 5:30 pm sharp, and they play a different game each week for a small prize fund. Call the clubhouse for more info at (918) 652-8664.

**** Reminder – If you know you’re not going to be able to play, please call Gayle at 580-421-5084, or leave word at the pro shop at 652-8664 so we’ll know how many are ready to tee off at each Tuesday. Thanks so much for your cooperation.
